Because treating children opens up a whole new dimension to your practice.
Childhood and adolescence are formative years. The health challenges children experience can affect not only how they feel today, but how they learn, develop, relate to others and move into adulthood.
The need for skilled, age-appropriate care is significant: globally, around 1 in 7 young people aged 10–19 experiences a mental health condition (World Health Organization, 2025), and many mental health conditions first emerge during childhood and adolescence.
As acupuncturists, learning to work with children gives us the opportunity to broaden the care we can offer — to welcome the child of an existing patient, support more of the family, and develop a completely different set of clinical and communication skills.
Pediatric practice asks us to think differently. Children are developing and changing all the time. Treatment needs to be adapted to their age, constitution, development and individual needs — and practitioners need the appropriate training to do that well.
Recent research on pediatric acupuncture safety is encouraging, while also emphasising the need for appropriately trained practitioners and stronger evidence in the field (PubMed: Pediatric Acupuncture Safety Scoping Review).
Whether you go on to treat the occasional child or make pediatrics the heart of your practice, having the confidence and skills to work with younger patients can be an incredibly rewarding addition to your work.
